  1.           The mass production methods utilized for bookmaking 
  2.      made it possible and indeed necessary to think of books 
  3.      less as representations of words serving for the 
  4.      communication of thought and more as things. Books came 
  5.      to be regarded more and more as products of crafts and as 
  6.      commodities to be merchandised. The word, living human 
  7.      speech, is here in a sense reified. Even before the advent of 
  8.      typography a marked reification of the word had been 
  9.      begun by the medieval terminist logicians, and elsewhere I 
  10.      have discussed in detail the psychological connections 
  11.      between terminist logic, the topical logic which succeeded it 
  12.      in the humanist age, and the development of attitudes 
  13.      toward communication favoring typography. The terminist 
  14.      logic was indeed still represented at Paris in Ramus‚Äô youth 
  15.      or not long before by persons such as Juan de Celaya, John 
  16.      Dullaert, and John Major, and even later by Ramus‚Äô own
